Endowment Program
An endowment is a restricted fund that is created with money put aside from school budgets and grown with gifts of cash, securities, real estate and other means from individuals, corporations and foundations. The principal funds of an endowment are invested in a disciplined manner and all the earnings and investment appreciation are channeled back into the fund. This allows the fund to grow over time and become a source of long term support that can be maintained permanently.
Understanding the need to establish a predictable stream of income other than tuition, Brother Andrew O’Gara and the Christian Brothers Academy Board of Trustees established the CBA General Endowment Fund some 20 years ago. Through careful investment and generous donations, the fund has continued to grow, and at the close of fiscal 2012, stood at just over $10 million.
It is no coincidence that the nation’s finest independent schools possess the largest endowments. To secure CBA’s position as one of New Jersey’s finest college-prepatory institutions, the endowment must continue to grow. As a sign of CBA’s commitment to continue as a premier Catholic institution, the Board of Trustees has established a policy not to spend any endowment income until it reaches a value of $20 million. This will generate approximately $1 million in funds annually to supplement the school’s operating budget, financial aid, faculty support and capital improvements.
Endowment Giving
There are a number of ways to invest in the future of Christian Brothers Academy, whether by making a planned gift to the General Endowment or establishing a endowed fund in your own name or that of a loved one.
General Endowment
Investment earnings from the General Endowment are intended to supplement the school’s annual operating budget, financial aid, faculty support and capital improvements
Gifts of any size may be designated for the General Endowment Fund. Donors’ names will appear in the CBA Annual Report, and will receive permanent recognition on a plaque in the main hallway of the school.
Named Scholarship Endowments
Investment earnings from a named scholarship endowment fund will provide, in perpetuity, financial assistance to academically qualified students with a demonstrated financial need.
Named scholarship endowment funds receive permanent recognition on a plaque in the main hallway of the school as well as in the CBA Annual Report, where new donors to the fund are also recognized each year.
Named scholarship endowments may be established with a minimum gift or pledge of $25,000. Additional contributions can be designated to the fund at any time, allowing the balance and annual scholarship disbursement to grow.
Donors may establish the selection criteria for the recipient of their named scholarship within the guidelines of the CBA gift acceptance policy, but in compliance with IRS regulations, they may not designate their scholarship toward the tuition account of a specific student.
