Fresh off their success at the Raritan Bay Invitational, the CBA sailing team sent two teams to the Battle of Monmouth Regatta held at the Shrewsbury Sailing Yacht Club last Saturday.  Top notch sailing put both teams in the top five with the team of Jonathan Lutz/Jack Hurley and David Alldian/Trevor Koerwer finishing 2^nd overall and the team of Christian Koerwer/Peter Maes and Mike Paolillo/Kyle Lavin finishing 4^th overall.  The highlight of the days was the first place finish of Mike and Kyle (a freshman participating in his first regatta ever).  Clearly the CBA sailing team has a bright future.  The team sails this coming Saturday (5/19) at the NJ Championship in Toms River Yacht Club.

“An Evening with David Benoit” will be held Friday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Henderson Theatre, an event organized by The CBA Jazz Series.  This is a unique opportunity to see the legendary jazz pianist and composer in an intimate setting and only 350 tickets will be sold to this exclusive event.

Board of Trustees member Joe Tort, ‘76, P ‘07, P ‘14 explains, “Experience and participation in music and arts is closely tied to academic success and is an important part of developing both our schools and community.”

CBA has expanded its performing arts program in recent years to give its students not only a competitive but heightened experience from other area high schools.  The Jazz Ensemble and complementary series, describes Tort, are just recent examples of the Academy’s broadened arts offerings.

The CBA Jazz Series was founded with a mission that is twofold: experiencing legendary jazz sound in an up-close-and-personal venue and raising funds for the Performing Arts Department at CBA.

Karen Gold, Music Director of The CBA Jazz Series, says, “David Benoit is a legend in the Jazz community.  It is a pleasure and a privilege that he should share our stage.”

Benoit was selected for this year’s performance not only for his talent and extensive career but also for his commitment to education.  He has been a longtime guest educator with the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, winning the organization’s “Excellence in Music Education” award.

Since launching his recording career in 1977, Benoit’s expansive career as a contemporary jazz pianist and composer has included over 25 solo recordings. His ’80s releases This Side Up, Freedom at Midnight and the GRAMMY-nominated Every Step of the Way are considered influential genre classics. 

Benoit’s prolific output since 2000 includes several prominent Charlie Brown related projects (including Here’s To You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years and the star-studded 40 Years: A Charlie Brown Christmas) that reflect his lifelong passion for the music of original Peanuts composer Vince Guaraldi and solidify Benoit’s role as his musical heir.

"An Evening with David Benoit” will include highlights from the artist’s career as well as new material from his recently recorded album Conversation set for release on May 29. 

Concert tickets are $50 per person for premium seating and there are a limited number of value seats available for $25.  A pre-concert reception featuring light fare, beer and wine are available in advance of the evening for an additional $25 per person at time of purchase.

Sponsorships are available and include a select backstage meet-and-greet reception with Benoit after the show and acknowledgement in printed and promotional materials.

Santanello, currently Associate Principal for Academic Affairs at the Academy, will assume his new role at the end of the 2011-12 school year.  He succeeds Brother James Butler, who has been appointed President of La Salle College High School, Philadelphia, following four years at CBA. 

A member of the CBA faculty since 1974, Santanello was appointed Associate Principal for Academic Affairs in 1982.  In addition to teaching mathematics, he has spearheaded numerous initiatives to continuously update and enhance CBA’s academic curriculum, served as Student Council moderator, and represented the faculty to the Board of Trustees.

It was at Santanello’s insistence, early in his tenure as Associate Principal, that CBA entered the evaluation process for the Blue Ribbon Schools Program, resulting in the Academy ’s national recognition as an Exemplary Private School.  CBA was one of the first schools in the United States to be so recognized, with an award widely considered to be the highest distinction an American school can receive.

Santanello has also led the school through several cycles of the comprehensive self-study and re-evaluation required regularly to renew CBA’s accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.  CBA is one of a few schools recently selected by the Middle States Association to inaugurate a special re-accreditation process designed for outstanding schools.   

“The excellent academic reputation that CBA enjoys is due in large part to Pete’s efforts over the years, and I am looking forward to working closely with him as Principal” said Brother Frank.  “He has the confidence and support of our faculty, and his name is one that always comes up at alumni gatherings when graduates recall the teachers who have made a strong impact on their lives.

Santanello will be the first CBA Principal who is not a Christian Brother.   Honored with the Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award in 1997, he helped craft the document Characteristics of Lasallian Schools, which is an articulation of the educational philosophy of the Roman Catholic teaching order, the Brothers of the Christian Schools.  He has also served on the Brothers’ District Ministry Team.

“My association with the Christian Brothers began when I was a student at St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School in West New York,” Santanello says, “and my years at CBA have fostered a strong commitment to Lasallian educational values.  I am looking forward to continuing my service to CBA in this new role.”

Santanello earned his A.B. summa cum laude at St. Peter’s College, his M.S. in mathematics at Rutgers University, and his Ed.M. also at Rutgers.  He and his wife, Janice, are the parents of two children.  Their son, Dr. Andrew Santanello, is a 1997 CBA graduate.

Christian Brothers Academy, founded in 1959, is an independent college preparatory school for young men in Lincroft, New Jersey.  Its current enrollment is 950 students, from Monmouth, Ocean, and Middlesex Counties.  Sponsored by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a Roman Catholic teaching order founded in France by St. John Baptist de La Salle in the late 17th century, CBA is one of 55 Lasallian secondary schools in the United States.
