Chess Students Compete in Regional Championship

Chess Students Compete in Regional Championship
Jason Lutz

Sophomores Tanner Ruttle and Samuel Teyf made a name for themselves at the New York Metro Area Scholastic Chess Championships.

Together, the duo earned a top-10 finish for CBA in the overall competition, competing in toughest division that featured an average US Chess Federation Rating of 1625. It was the first-ever New York Metro Area competition, which featured over 1,400 students from kindergarten to 12th grade at the New York Marriott Marquis.

Even more impressively, Ruttle earned first place in the U1500 division. While winning his age group, the performance placed Ruttle in the top 50 of the overall high school competition.

"The chess games were long and extremely stressful, lasting up to two and a half hours," Ruttle explained. "Although stressful, it was a fun experience to meet other chess players, talk with them, and win. The moment I found out that I had won, I could not believe it, as first is an exceptional achievement."

CBA Chess meets weekly in Room 116. Students can speak with Mr. Reagan for more information about the club.

About the New York Metro Area Scholastic Chess Championship

After years without a major championship in NYC, the 2026 Metros brings back the essential element that defines a true championship experience: a real hotel venue. A professional setting elevates and legitimizes the event for the kids, motivating them to push further in their chess journeys. The scale, energy, and atmosphere of a hotel ballroom create that larger-than-life moment inspiring all the young players.
