In a flexible format, students will learn about engineering and engineering problem solving. They will be given thorough introductions to the VEX Robotics Design System and the ROBOTC programming language. The course includes a hands-on experience building the VEX EDR Clawbot and utilizing its variety of sensors as well as prototyping in a computer-based virtual world. By the end of the course, the student’s robot will be able to operate both autonomously and under remote control. Throughout the year, students will strengthen valuable team-building skills as they collaborate with their peers to direct their robot to overcome a variety of challenges. They will learn key STEM principles through a process that captures the excitement and engagement of robotics. Finally. Freshman Computer Seminar, the first in a series of computer science courses, exposes underclassmen to a variety of technology skills that sets the foundation upon which higher level computer courses expand. As such, our mission is to help students develop the skills necessary to analyze situations and use specific computer language to solve problems. (2 Credits)

The mission of Creative Engineering is to give students the experience of identifying a problem or pain point in a life scene and conceive, research, prototype, and build a functional solution. Creative Engineering is the process of brainstorming and building as well as telling the story of their project in a compelling way such as is done by many YouTube professionals. Students will incorporate idea generating, 3D modeling, CNC routing, and construction techniques. The iterative troubleshooting process and incremental problem-solving experiences are essential. Students will become comfortable with small failures being essential on the road to success. Rather than be frustrated by setbacks, they should learn to be motivated by them. Students will be asked to purchase materials that they will use in making projects for this class. (5 credits)

The direct purpose of this course is to prepare the student to take the AP CS A exam. The course simulates an introduction to computer science course that is offered at many colleges and universities. The curriculum gives a thorough introduction to Computer Science in the language of Java and covers all typical procedural and object oriented programming concepts such as variables, selection structures, loops and recursion, functions and methods, arrays, collections, as well as object oriented program design and algorithms.
