Mathematics

Mathematics Department

The mission of the Mathematics department is to enable all students to develop skills in analysis and creativity, as well as critical thinking, while they acquire the requisite technical knowledge of mathematics. Our students learn to understand that mathematics is not a series of disjointed facts, procedures, and processes, but a continuous discipline with a common foundation. As students are guided along their journey, we recognize there are multiple means to achieving successful ends and therefore eschew a 'one size fits all' solution approach.

CBA's mathematics curriculum offers College Prep, Honors, and Accelerated Courses from Algebra I through Differential Equations, as well as all College Board-sanctioned advanced placement courses (i.e., Calculus AB, BC, and Statistics). Progression through the mathematics curriculum is based upon demonstrated ability via meritorious performance and is not defined by grade level.

  • 9th-grade math placement is based on a combination of factors. A student's math class level (College Prep, Honors, or Accelerated) is based on their score on the CBA Entrance Exam. A student's math class is based on a series of Exemption Exams, beginning with the Algebra I Exemption Exam, to assess the student's level of content knowledge in the subject. The Exemption Exams are held in the spring of a student's 8th-grade school year.
  • Placement in an Honors-level or Accelerated-level class in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade is based on a student earning the required GPA in the pre-requisite course the year prior.
  • Placement in an AP-level class in 10th, 11th or 12th grade requires a special application. All students enrolled in an AP class are required to take the AP exam at the end of the year.
  • Math Team is a 1-credit elective available all 4 years.
