From the day you begin your academic journey at the Academy, our dedicated School & College Counseling team is walking alongside you.

In the spirit of the mission of St. John Baptist de La Salle, the School & College Counseling Department seeks to meet the needs of our students. Our counselors help foster the growth of healthy young men of character, who are committed to action and the service of others. By focusing on the development of the whole person, our counselors work with our students every step of the way, addressing their academic, social, emotional, and spiritual needs.

The School & Counseling Office places a particular emphasis on the wellness and readiness of our students. Students are encouraged to seek information, examine alternative routes of action, and assume responsibility for making his own post-graduate plans and decisions.

By focusing on the whole person - the mind, body, and spirit - every young man can discover and develop the talents and gifts that God has given him.

A Student's Journey Through CBA

Freshmen

As freshmen, students are provided with continuous encouragement in their academic pursuits. A focus on topics like study habits, time management, extracurricular involvement and social adjustment are meant to ease the transition to CBA. Counselors encourage freshmen to set and work toward various goals—both academic and non-academic—as they make their way through the Academy.

Sophomore

Junior

Continue to study hard and perform well academically.
Involve yourself deeply in activities.
Enthusiastically participate in your College and Career Planning class. This class will provide you with important information relative to the college process.
Begin to familiarize yourself with the many tools available in Maia including College Search Engines, Scholarship Search Engines, Career Information, Pre-College Summer Programs, numerous links to many helpful webpages and much more.
Utilize one of the college search engines in Maia Learning to run a preliminary list of colleges for which you have some interest. Think about your desire to attend specific colleges with an emphasis on your goals, values, interests and abilities.
Discuss a standardized testing plan with your counselor. Check out the test dates for the SAT, ACT or both. Register early. Utilize the test prep that works best for you.
All juniors will attend the Mini-Fair on Wednesday, October 8.
All juniors will take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 15.
Juniors will begin to take career assessment tests in their College and Career Planning class, review the results and then take advantage of the huge amounts of career information available in Maia Learning.
Beginning in the fall, juniors will formally meet with their counselor to discuss the college admissions process and begin to develop a potential list of appropriate schools to consider.

Senior

Your senior year is the culmination of your 4-year CBA journey - make it count!
Communicate and meet with your School Counselor regularly.
Work with your college counselor to attend to all the details of the process, including:
- Completing applications
- Writing the essay
- Completing Transcript Request Forms
- Standardized testing
Your senior grades matter to colleges - many will review your 1st quarter or 1st semester grades when making a decision. It’s important to start the year strong and keep it up!
Remember to thank the teachers who have written your letters of recommendation.
Don’t leave college supplemental essays until the last minute! Some colleges will have multiple supplements - you need to give the supplements the same attention you give your essay.
Attend the college representative visits at CBA through the fall. This is a good way to demonstrate interest to the school.
All seniors will attend the mini-fair on Wednesday, October 8.
Student Athletes should complete the NCAA Clearinghouse requirements by applying on-line at the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Complete and submit applications for all Early Action/Early Decision schools. Check all deadlines. Remember: don’t be on time, be early!
Throughout the year continue to study hard, commit to your activities, and engage in the CBA community!

The CBA Parent Curriculum is a comprehensive set of events designed to inform parents about the college admissions process and academic success.

This series of events allow parents to feel confident in their ability to not only assist in the college process, but also allow their children to be the “driver” of that process.

Junior Parent Meetings

Junior parent(s)/guardians will be invited to attend an individual, in person meeting with their son and son’s counselor to discuss expectations and goals for the year ahead as it relates to the college admission process. The opportunity to have parent(s) and sons together to discuss their preferences on topics such as, location, size, major, cost, faith, sports, etc. truly helps counselors identify the most appropriate schools for their list. These 45 minute meetings during the school day allow counselors to answer questions about the role of test scores, how to build a balanced list, how to pay for college, share tips on the college essay and answer any other question that may arise.
