The CBA Scholarship Program

2024-2025 Incoming Freshmen Scholarship Opportunities

Students may apply for any scholarship for which they meet the criteria after being accepted to CBA in December of 2023. The scholarship application opens on December 22, 2023. 

Welcome to the Class of 2027 and congratulations on your acceptance to CBA! The scholarships on this page are for YOU – our incoming Class of 2028 – and we are excited to help you explore your options as you look forward to becoming a part of our community.

The scholarships below are available for the 2024-2025 school year. We invite you to click on the categories to learn more and determine which scholarships you may be eligible for. Please read the criteria fully to determine if you may be eligible before applying. The Scholarship Application Form, which you will use to apply for the scholarships below, can be found in your Enrollment Checklist on your School Admin Parent Portal. A student may apply for as many scholarships as he chooses and for which he is eligible, but no student will be awarded more than one applicable scholarship. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The Alumni Association Scholarship

Through their scholarship program, the CBA Alumni Association seeks to help make a CBA education possible for an incoming freshman whose family could not otherwise afford a CBA education.As this scholarship provides full tuition support, it will be awarded to a student who demonstrates high financial need via the FACTS Financial Aid application.

This full tuition scholarship is renewable each year the student attends CBA. A committee of members of the CBA Alumni Association will review all applications and determine finalists who will be invited to an interview with the committee.

Eligibility:

  • Demonstrated financial need – please complete a FACTS Financial Assistance Application
  • Demonstrated academic achievement
  • Demonstrated involvement in your school and community

Requirements:

  •  Letter of Recommendation from your Middle School Principal
  • Please write a 200 word essay on why you want to attend Christian Brothers Academy and what goals you hope being a student at CBA can help you to achieve
  • List of activities, awards, and honors
    • Please list the principal school and community activities in which you have participated during the past four years

The John Andrew Molinelli Memorial Scholarship

Founded by Michael and Nancy Gualario, this full tuition scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who demonstrates strong academic potential and a commitment to the mission and philosophy of Christian Brothers Academy. As this scholarship provides full tuition support, it will be awarded to a student who demonstrates high financial need via the FACTS Financial Aid application, and could otherwise not afford a CBA education. Preference in the recipient of this scholarship will be for a student who has suffered the death of one or both of his parents. 

Eligibility:

  • Loss of one or both parents
  • Demonstrated financial need – please make sure to fill out a FACTS Financial Assistance Application
  • Demonstrated academic achievement
  • Demonstrated involvement in your school and community

Application Requirements:

  • Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: Reflect on all of the experiences that have impacted your life; most notably, the loss or hardship which you and your family have endured. Every experience, even the difficult ones, help to shape who we are – how will you use what you’ve learned to maximize your CBA experience?  
  • Letter of recommendation from a middle school teacher
  • Completed FACTS Financial Assistance Application

This scholarship is renewable for three years provided the recipient maintains a GPA of 85%.

Scholarships for Overall Academic Achievement

Students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to their academics and overall academic achievement throughout middle school are invited to submit an application to this category of scholarship. Applying to this category of scholarship you will be eligible to receive one of the two scholarships below.

The Richard J. Alexander Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Founded by Mark ’76 and Kathleen Alexander, in honor of Mark’s father, Richard J. Alexander, this $4,000 scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman with documented financial need who has demonstrated overall outstanding academic achievement.

The Kevin G. Kelly ’96 Endowed Scholarship

Founded by Kevin G. Kelly ‘96, this $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman with documented financial need who has demonstrated overall outstanding academic achievement.

Each scholarship is renewable for three years providing the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

Eligibility:

  • Demonstrated financial need – please complete a FACTS Financial Assistance Application
  • Demonstrated academic achievement
  • Demonstrated involvement in your school and community

Application Requirements:

  • Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: Historically, young people have had the lowest voter turnout. When you turn 18, you will have the opportunity to play a role in our nation’s future. Why is exercising your right to vote important?
  • Letter of recommendation from a middle school teacher

Scholarships Reflecting a Commitment to the CBA Academy Oath

The CBA Academy Oath says that CBA students will do the following:

Live lives of honor and integrity,

Serve and stand for those in need,

Strive for wisdom in the pursuit of knowledge

Uphold the legacy and proud tradition of our Academy

At the beginning of your freshman year at CBA you will take part in Oath Day, and as a class, commit yourself to the pillars of the Academy Oath. In reciting this oath together and signing your name to the commitment, you are holding yourself to the ideals and standards of the Academy. The Academy Oath will serve as a constant reminder throughout your four years as a student here of your dedication to yourself, your family and the Academy.

Students applying to this category of scholarship will be eligible to receive one of the three scholarships below.

The Billet, Caruso, Golding Scholarship

This scholarship combines the generosity of three CBA families who each saw the benefit that an Academy education had for their sons. The Billet Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, The Giulio and Beth Caruso Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, and The Golding Family Endowed Scholarship Fund collectively make it possible for an incoming freshman to receive a $3,000 scholarship.

The Dorgan, Goldman, Kortenhaus Scholarship

This scholarship combines the generosity of three CBA families who each saw the benefit that an Academy education had for their sons. The Dorgan Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, The Goldman Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, and The Robert ‘79 & Cynthia Kortenhaus Endowed Scholarship Fund collectively make it possible for an incoming freshman to receive a $3,000 scholarship.

The Thomas J. DeFelice ‘70 Endowed Scholarship

Founded in honor of Thomas J. DeFelice ‘70 by his brother, Paul, this $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman

Each scholarship is renewable for three years providing the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

Eligibility:

  • Demonstrated financial need – please complete a FACTS Financial Assistance Application
  • Demonstrated involvement in your school and community
  • Demonstrated commitment to developing your character 

Application Requirements:

  • Please submit an essay (500 word limit)  in response to the following: Pick one of the four ideals in the Academy Oath and explain why it is of personal importance to your future as you prepare to be a student at Christian Brothers Academy.
  • Please have a letter of recommendation submitted on your behalf, written by someone who can speak to your character.
  • Completed FACTS Financial Assistance Application

Scholarships for Commitment to Community Service

Service to others is a hallmark of Lasallian education. St. John Baptist de La Salle challenges all of us to express our faith through the service of others. As CBA aims to build young men of faith, character, and action, showing a commitment to one’s community is an ideal quality to see in our prospective students. Students applying to this category of scholarship will be eligible to receive one of the three scholarships below. 

The William C. Barham ‘71 Endowed Scholarship

Founded by William Barham, this $4,000 scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who demonstrates a dedicated commitment to his community. 

The McFadden, Van Winkle Scholarship

This scholarship combines the generosity of two benefactors to offer a $2,000 scholarship to an incoming freshman who has demonstrated a dedicated commitment to his community. The Shelia M. McFadden Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Van Winkle Family Endowed Scholarship Fund collectively make it possible for an incoming freshman to receive a $2,000 scholarship. 

The Christopher and Amanda Housen Family Endowed Scholarship

Founded by Christopher and Amanda Housen, this $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who demonstrates a dedicated commitment to his community. 

Eligibility:

  • Demonstrated financial need – please complete a FACTS Financial Assistance Application
  • 40 hours of community service
  • Demonstrated involvement in your school and community

Application Requirements:

  • Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: Based on your relevant experiences, how do you define the term “Community Service” and what has taking part in service to your community meant to your life?
  • 40 hours of Community Service – please send evidence of a minimum of 40 hours that you have spent in service to your community over the past two years
  • Letter of recommendation from someone you have worked with in completing service
  • Completed FACTS Financial Assistance Application

Each scholarship is renewable for three years providing the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

The Dr. Reverend Garry Koch Scholarship for a St. Benedict School Student

Founded by Father Koch, this $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student currently enrolled at St. Benedict School in Holmdel, NJ. This scholarship is renewable for three years provided the recipient maintains a GPA of 80%.

Application Requirements:

  • Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: What was the one thing that you learned as a member of St. Benedict School that you think will be most valuable to you as a CBA student?

The Kathleen Doehner Endowed Memorial Scholarship for a St. Leo the Great Student

Founded in loving memory of longtime St. Leo’s benefactor and CBA Board of Trustee member Kathleen Doehner, this $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to a student currently enrolled in St. Leo the Great School in Lincroft, NJ.

This $2,500 scholarship is renewable for three years provided the recipient maintains a GPA of 80%.

Application Requirements:

  • Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: What was the one thing that you learned as a member of St. Leo the Great School that you think will be most valuable to you as a CBA student?

The John and Eileen Reynolds Endowed Scholarship for a St. Thomas the Apostle Student

Founded by John Reynolds ‘88 in honor of his parents, John and Eileen Reynolds, this $4,000 scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who attends St. Thomas the Apostle School of Old Bridge or is a parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church of Old Bridge. 

This $4,000 scholarship is renewable for three years provided the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of finance need is demonstrated. 

Application Requirements:

  • Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: What was the one thing that you learned as a member of St. Thomas the Apostle School or as a parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church that you think will be most valuable to you as a CBA student? 
  • Demonstrated financial need – please submit a FACTS Financial Assistance Application

Scholarships for Students Attending a Catholic Middle School

Students applying to this category of scholarship will receive one of the two scholarships listed below.

The Brother Frank Byrne FSC ‘75 Endowed Scholarship

Founded in honor of Brother Frank Byrne FSC ‘75, the second President of CBA, in recognition of his twelve years of service, this $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who attends a Catholic Middle School. 

This $3,000 scholarship is renewable for three years provided the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of finance need is demonstrated. 

The Knapp Family Endowed Scholarship

Founded by the Knapp Family, this $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who attends a Catholic Middle School. Preference will be given to a student whose parent or legal guardian has a physical disability. 

This $3,000 scholarship is renewable for three years provided the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of finance need is demonstrated. 

Eligibility:

  • Currently attends a Catholic Middle School
  • For the Knapp Family Scholarship, preference will be given to a student whose parent or legal guardian has a physical disability.
  • Demonstrated financial need – please make sure to fill out a FACTS Financial Assistance Application

Application Requirements:

  • Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: What was the one thing that you learned as a member of your Catholic Middle School that you think will be most valuable to you as a CBA student? 
  • Demonstrated financial need – please submit a FACTS Financial Assistance Application
  • Completed FACTS Financial Assistance Application

Each scholarship is renewable for three years providing the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

Scholarships for Students Demonstrating Well Rounded Achievement

As a student at CBA you will be encouraged to deepen your faith as you grow as a young man. Involvement in our churches often starts at a young age as a member of the youth choir perhaps or an altar server. While you likely don’t realize it, each of those experiences, that involvement in your church, helps you to grow in your own faith.

Students applying to this category of scholarships must demonstrate a commitment to their church through their involvement in the church community. This may include, but not limited to: youth choir, youth group, altar server or serving as a religious education aide. Students applying to this category of scholarship will be eligible to receive one of the two scholarships below.

The Andrew Dreschler ‘90 Endowed Scholarship

Founded by Andrew and Moira Dreschler, this $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student with demonstrated involvement in his church.

The Joseph Popolo Jr. ‘85 Endowed Scholarship

Founded by the Popolo Family in honor of Joseph Popolo Jr, ;85, this $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student with demonstrated involvement in his church.

Eligibility:

  • Demonstrated involvement in your church
  • Demonstrated financial need – please make sure to fill out a FACTS Financial Assistance Application

Application Requirements:

  • Please submit an essay in response to the following: Reflect on all of the experiences that have impacted your life. As an 8th grade student preparing for high school, share how those experiences have prepared you for CBA. How will you maximize your CBA experience and deepen your faith? 
  • Letter of recommendation from a middle school teacher
  • Completed FACTS Financial Assistance Application

Scholarships for Students Involved in their Church

A pillar of the mission of Christian Brothers Academy is to develop intellectually mature, morally responsible young men in Mind, Body, and Spirit. To truly prepare our students it is necessary to provide a holistic education encouraging individual development and growth in all areas. CBA Students are Men For Character, Men For Brotherhood and Men For Achievement. We know that you take part in many activities in your school and community and this category of scholarships is your chance to tell us all about it! Students applying to this category of scholarship will be eligible for one of the two scholarships below. 

The Knepple and O’Malley Scholarship

Through the generosity of the Knepple Family and the O’Malley Family both of whom recognize the importance of the contemporary, Catholic, college-preparatory education at CBA, this $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to a student who supports, by his attitude and actions, the philosophy and mission of CBA.

The Joseph Burke ‘65 Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Founded by the OceanFirst Foundation and friends and family of Joseph Burke ‘65 this $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who supports, by his attitude and actions, the philosophy and mission of CBA.

Eligibility:

  • Demonstrated all around achievement
  • Demonstrated financial need – please make sure to fill out a FACTS Financial Assistance Application

Application Requirements:

  • Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: Reflect on all of the experiences that have impacted your life. Pick 1-3 activities or events that you have been a part of and describe your involvement. 
  • Letter of recommendation from a middle school teacher

Each scholarship is renewable for three years providing the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

The Scholarships listed below do not require a separate application. Students are given consideration through the admissions application review. 

The De La Salle Scholarship

The De La Salle Scholarships are determined on the basis of entrance exam scores, grade reports, and evaluations from the applicant’s previous school, the contents of the application, and the essay written during the entrance exam.  These scholarships are awarded by the Admissions Committee and no further materials are needed to apply.

These scholarships are renewable for three additional years as long as the recipient maintains a GPA of 90.

The Founders Scholarship

Named in memory of John Henderson. John Fleming and George Sheehan, the founders of CBA, the Founders Scholarships are determined on the basis of entrance exam scores, grade reports, and evaluations from the applicant’s previous school, the contents of the application, and the essay written during the entrance exam.  These scholarships are awarded by the Admissions Committee and no further materials are needed to apply.

These scholarships are renewable for three additional years as long as the recipient maintains a GPA of 90.

The Brother Andrew O'Gara FSC Memorial Scholarship

Named in memory of CBA’s first President, The Brother Andrew O’Gara, FSC Memorial Scholarships are determined on the basis of entrance exam scores, grade reports and evaluations from the applicant’s previous school, the contents of the application, and the essay written during the entrance exam.  These scholarships are awarded by the Admissions Committee and no further materials are needed to apply.

This scholarship is renewable for three additional years as long as the student maintains a GPA of 90.

The Brother Christian Jones FSC Memorial Scholarship for Mathematics

The Brother Christian Jones FSC Memorial Scholarship is offered to support an incoming freshman who has demonstrated a high proficiency in the subject of mathematics.

Candidates are determined based on performance on the math portion of the CBA entrance exam; qualified candidates will receive notification of their eligibility in the mail. The scholarship is awarded based on the student’s performance on a separate test that eligible candidates will be invited to take.

This $2,500 scholarship will be applied only in the 2023/2024 school year.

The Peter R. Santanello Scholarship

This $2,000 scholarship was founded in honor of Mr. Peter R. Santanello who served the CBA community for 41 years as the first layman to be appointed Principal. This scholarship is based on financial need and math aptitude and is selected by the President of CBA.

This scholarship is renewable for three additional years as long as the recipient maintains a GPA of 86.
