2021-2022 Incoming Freshmen Scholarship Opportunities

Welcome to the Class of 2025 and congratulations on your acceptance to CBA! The scholarships on this page are for YOU – our incoming Class of 2025 – and we are excited to help you explore your options as you look forward to becoming a part of our community.

The scholarships below are available for the 2021-2022 school year. We invite you to click on the categories to learn more and determine which scholarships you may be eligible for. Please read the criteria fully to determine if you may be eligible before applying. A student may apply for as many scholarships as he chooses and for which he is eligible, but no student will be awarded more than one applicable scholarship. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The Class of 2025 scholarships below require an application and supporting materials to be submitted by the applicant.

General Instructions for Applying

You may apply for the scholarships in the categories below by sending an email indicting your interest and attaching the required essay to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org.

All supplemental materials (letters of recommendation, proof of service, portfolio materials, and performance videos) must be emailed to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org with the applicants last name and names of scholarships being applied for in the subject line. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Letters of recommendation and proof of service must come directly from the person providing the recommendation or the proof of service.

Please carefully read the criteria for each scholarship to determine your eligibility.

Any student applying for a financial need-based scholarship must submit the financial aid application through FACTS Management in order to be considered.

Class of 2025 Scholarships

The Conte First Generation American Scholarship

Founded by J.P. Conte ’81, this full scholarship is designated for a student who has self-identified as an immigrant or a child or immigrant parents.  The completed application includes an essay, a letter of recommendation on the applicant’s personal character from a representative of the candidate’s middle school, and documented evidence of financial need.

Required Essay (500 word limit):

What talents, dreams, and personal experiences will you bring to the CBA community to make it a more vibrant, compassionate, and inclusive environment?

Please attach your essay to your submission email sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org; the title of the document should include the applicant’s last name and “Conte essay.”

Please have your letter of recommendation sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org; the title of the email should include the applicant’s last name and “Conte letter.”

This scholarship is renewable for three additional years provided the recipient maintains an overall GPA of 80.

Academic Merit Scholarships

The Academy Oath states that CBA students will “strive for wisdom in our pursuit of knowledge.”  Please submit an essay (500 word limit) which answers the following: What does this mean to you and how do you plan to achieve this as a CBA student?

Application Requirements: Essay and a letter of recommendation from someone who can speak to the applicant’s academic accomplishments. Additionally, applicants and their families must complete a financial aid application through FACTS Management in order to be considered.

Letters of recommendation should be emailed to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org with your last name and “Academic Merit” in the subject line.

Applicants will be eligible for the following scholarships:

The DG Foundation Scholarship

This $2,000 scholarship is funded by The DG Foundation. This scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman with documented financial need who has demonstrated overall outstanding academic success.

This scholarship is renewable for three years providing the recipient maintain a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

The Brother Michael Dwyer FSC Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship was founded in memory of Brother Michael Dwyer.

This scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman with documented financial need who has demonstrated overall outstanding academic success.

This scholarship is renewable for three years providing the recipient maintain a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

Community Service Scholarships

The scholarships below were founded to recognize students’ involvement in Community Service.  Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: Based on your relevant experiences, how do you define the term “Community Service” and what has taking part in service to your community meant to your life?

Application Requirements: Please attach your essay to your submission email sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org; the title of the document should include your last name and “Community Service.”

40 Hours of Community Service Required:

Please send evidence of a minimum of 40 hours spent in service to the community in the 2019 calendar year to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org. Documentation must be sent directly by the person providing the evidence; the title of this file should include the applicant’s last name and “Community Service.”

Additionally, applicants and their families must complete a financial aid application through FACTS Management in order to be considered.

Applicants will be eligible for the following scholarship:

The Gary R. Collier ’75 Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is founded in loving memory of Gary R. Collier ’75.  This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a qualified incoming freshman who strives for a CBA education and has demonstrated a selfless love of his community.

This $1,500 scholarship will be applied only in the 2021/ 2022 school year.

Christian Leadership and Service Scholarships

The scholarships below were founded to recognize students’ involvement awarded for Christian Leadership and Service.  Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: Based on your relevant experiences, how do you define the term “Christian leader or servant” and why do you consider yourself to be one?

Application Requirements: Please attach your essay to your submission email sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org; the title of the document should include your last name and “Christian Leadership.”

Please have a letter(s) verifying your involvement in Christian Leadership or Christian Service activities sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org.  This letter must be sent directly by the person providing the evidence; the title of this file should include the applicant’s last name and “Christian Leadership.”

Additionally, applicants and their families must complete a financial aid application through FACTS Management in order to be considered.

Applicants will be eligible for the following scholarships:

The Brother Bernard McKenna FSC Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Christian Service

Founded by Patrick J. Thornton ’71, in memory of Brother Bernard McKenna FSC, this $2,500 scholarship is currently awarded to a student who has demonstrated a superior commitment to Christian Service.

This $2,500 scholarship is renewable for three years provided that the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

The Mark ’97 and Christy Russo Endowed Scholarship

Founded by Mark ’97 and Christy Russo, this $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a qualified incoming freshman who has demonstrated superior Christian leadership inside his community.

This $1,000 scholarship is renewable for three years provided that the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

Scholarships for Excellence in Science and Technology

Please submit an essay (500 word limit) which discusses the most important discovery or research related to science and/or technology which has been conducted in your lifetime.  How has it/will it directly impact your life and what would you like to do to contribute to further research?

Application Requirements: Please attach your essay to your submission email sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org; the title of the document should include your last name and “Science/Tech.” In addition, provide evidence/summary of a science/technology project you completed in the 2019 calendar year.

Please attach your evidence as a word or video file to your submission email; the title of the file should include your last name and “Science/Tech.”

Please have a Middle School Science teacher send a letter of recommendation on your behalf to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org. The letter of recommendation must be sent directly by the person providing the recommendation; the title of this file should include the applicant’s last name and “Science/Tech.”

Applicants will be eligible for the following scholarships:

The Brother Patrick Higgins FSC Memorial Scholarship for Science and Technology

Founded in memory of Brother Patrick Higgins FSC, this $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who has demonstrated a talent for critical thought and creativity in science and technology.

This $2,500 scholarship will be applied only in the 2021/2022 school year.  The winner will be required to be a member of the Science Team.

The John Vickers ’82 Memorial Scholarship for Science and Technology

Founded by Peter and Carmel Vickers, in loving memory of their son John Vickers ’82, this $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who has demonstrated a talent for critical thought and creativity in science and technology.

This $2,500 scholarship will be applied only in the 2021/2022 school year. The winner will be required to be a member of the Science Team.

Scholarship for Excellence in Social Sciences

Please submit an essay (500 word limit) which discusses the most important discovery, research, or event within the social sciences which has taken place in your lifetime. Social Sciences can be defined as any aspect of history, geography, economics, psychology, sociology or social studies.  How has it/will it directly impact your life and what would you like to do to contribute to further research or discovery?

Application Requirements: Please attach your essay to your submission email sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org; the title of the document should include your last name and “Social Sciences.”

Please have a Middle School Social Studies teacher send a letter of recommendation on your behalf to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org.  The letter of recommendation must be sent directly by the person providing the recommendation; the title of this file should include the applicant’s last name and “Social Sciences.”

Applicants will be eligible for the following scholarships:

The Brother Basilian O’Connor FSC Memorial Scholarship

Founded in memory of Brother Basilian O’Connor FSC, this $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who has demonstrated a talent in critical thought and creativity in the social sciences (history, geography, social studies, economics, psychology).

This $2,500 scholarship will be applied only in the 2021/2022 school year.

The Brother Cyril O’Neill FSC Memorial Scholarship for Social Sciences

Founded in memory of Brother Cyril O’Neill FSC, this $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who has demonstrated a talent in critical thought and creativity in the social sciences (history, geography, social studies, economics, psychology).

This $2,500 scholarship will be applied only in the 2021/2022 school year.

 

Scholarships for Excellence in the Performing Arts

Please attach ONE video of a live performance in the performing arts before an audience.

Please attach your file to your submission email addressed to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org; the title of the file should include your last name and “Performing Arts.”

Additionally, applicants and their families must complete a financial aid application through FACTS Management in order to be considered.

Applicants will be eligible for the following scholarships

The Reilly Family Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was founded by Mr. and Mrs. James T. Reilly. This $1,000 endowed scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who has demonstrated an exceptional talent in the performing arts and an interest in pursuing the performing arts at CBA.

This $1,000 scholarship is renewable for three years provided that the recipient maintains an overall GPA of 80%, actively participates in the performing arts in each of his years, and continues to provide evidence of financial need.

The James L. Schwartz ’70 Scholarship for Performing Arts

Founded by Jon ’72 and Jane Schwartz in loving memory of James Schwartz ’70, this $1,000 endowed scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who has demonstrated an exceptional talent in the performing arts and an interest in pursuing the performing arts at CBA.

This $1,000 scholarship is renewable for three years provided that the recipient maintains an overall GPA of 80%, actively participates in the performing arts in each of his years, and continues to provide evidence of financial need.

Scholarship for Excellence in Creative Writing

Please attach between THREE and FIVE samples of your creative writing in an email sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org; the titles of the files should include your last name and “Creative Writing.”

Please have a letter of recommendation regarding the applicant’s writing abilities sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org.  The letter of recommendation must be sent directly by the person providing the recommendation; the title of this file should include the applicant’s last name and “Creative Writing.”

Additionally, applicants and their families must complete a financial aid application through FACTS Management in order to be considered.

Applicants will be eligible for the following scholarship:

The R. Scott Garley ’74 Endowed Scholarship for Creative Writing

Founded by Scott Garley ’74, this $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman in the 2020/ 2021 school year based on documented financial need and the student’s demonstration of high proficiency in creative writing.

This $1,000 scholarship will be applied only in the 2021/2022 school year.

Scholarship for Students Attending a Catholic Middle School

Please submit an essay (500 word minimum) in response to the following: What was the one thing that you learned in your time at a Catholic middle school that you think will be most valuable to you as a CBA student?

Application Requirements: Please attach your essay to your submission email sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org. The title of the document should include your last name and “Catholic Middle.”

A letter of recommendation written by a representative from the applicant’s middle school. Please have letters of recommendation sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org. Letters must be sent directly from the person providing the recommendations; the title of this file should include the applicant’s last name and “Catholic Middle.”

Additionally, applicants and their families must complete a financial aid application through FACTS Management in order to be considered.

Applicants will be considered for the following scholarships:

The Br. Frank Byrne, FSC Scholarship

Founded by Br. Frank Byrne, FSC, CBA President, this $2,000 renewable scholarship will be awarded to a qualified incoming freshman who currently attends a Catholic middle school.

This scholarship is renewable providing the recipient maintain a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

The John and Eileen Reynolds Endowed Scholarship

Founded by John Reynolds ’88 in honor of his parents John and Eileen Reynolds, this $4,000 renewable scholarship will be awarded to a qualified incoming freshman. Preference in awarding this scholarship will be given to a student who attends St. Thomas of Old Bridge Catholic School or is a parishioner of St. Thomas of Old Bridge Catholic Church.

This scholarship is renewable providing the recipient maintain a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

The Barbara Zybrick Memorial Scholarship

Founded in loving memory of Barbara Zybrick, this scholarship will be awarded to a qualified incoming freshman student who attended a Catholic Middle School.

This $2,000 scholarship will be applied only to the 2021/2022 school year.

Scholarship for Students Involved in their Church

Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: What has been most important to you about being involved with your church?

Application Requirements: Please attach your essay to your submission email sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org. The title of the document should include your last name and “OMalley.”

A letter of personal recommendation from a representative of the applicant’s parish who can speak to the applicant’s involvement in his parish. Please have letters of recommendation sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org. Letters must be sent directly from the person providing the recommendations; the title of this file should include the applicant’s last name and “OMalley.”

Additionally, applicants and their families must complete a financial aid application through FACTS Management in order to be considered.

Applicants will be eligible for the following scholarship:

The Spiro Pappas ’71 Endowed Scholarship

Founded by Spiro Pappas ’71, this $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a qualified incoming freshman who has shown involvement in his church. Examples include altar server, church choir, religious education aide, youth group.

This $1,000 scholarship will be renewable for three years provided the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

Scholarships for Well-Rounded Achievement

Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: What will your classmates say about you at your 25th CBA reunion?

Application Requirements: Please attach your essay to your submission email sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org; the title of the document should include your last name and “WellRounded.”

Please have a representative of your middle school send a letter of recommendation to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org.  Letters of recommendation must be sent directly by the person providing the recommendation; the title of this file should include the applicant’s last name and “WellRounded.”

Additionally, applicants and their families must complete a financial aid application through FACTS Management in order to be considered.

Applicants will be eligible for the following scholarships:

The Mark and Trish Hansen Family Endowed Scholarship

Founded by the Hansen Family, this $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a qualified freshman who strives for a CBA education.

This $2,000 scholarship is renewable for three years provided that the recipient maintain a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

The William J. Johnson ’89 Memorial Scholarship

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ziola ’73 in loving memory of William Johnson ’89, this $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a qualified incoming freshman.

This $1,000 scholarship will be applied only in the 2021/2022 school year.

The Brother Henry McGrath FSC Memorial Scholarship

Founded in memory of Brother Henry McGrath FSC, this $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to a qualified incoming freshman.

This $2,500 scholarship will be applied only in the 2021/2022 school year.

The Robert ’00 and Jacqueline Russo Scholarship

Founded by Robert ’00 and Jacqueline Russo, this $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to a qualified incoming freshman.

This $2,500 scholarship will be applied only in the 2021/2022 school year.

St. Leo the Great Alumni Scholarship

Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: What was the one thing that you learned as a member of St. Leo’s School that you think will be most valuable to you as a CBA student?

Application Requirements: Please attach your essay to your submission email sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org; the title of the document should include your last name and “Doehner.”

Applicants will be eligible for the following scholarship:

The Kathleen Doehner Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Founded in memory of longtime St Leo’s benefactor and CBA Board of Trustee member Kathleen Doehner, this $2,500 renewable scholarship will be awarded to a student currently enrolled in St. Leo’s School in Lincroft, NJ. The completed application requires an essay.

This $2,500 scholarship is renewable for three years provided the recipient maintains a GPA of 80%.

Enduring Hardship Scholarships

One of the key principles of a CBA education is this: Life-long learning is essential for success in a changing society.

Please submit an essay (500 word limit) which discusses your views on this principle, including an example(s) of the sort of changes in society for which your CBA education can prepare you.

Application Requirements: Please attach your essay to your submission email sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org; the title of the document should include your last name and “Enduring Essay.”

Please also include a brief explanation of the manner in which your immediate family has been affected by cancer; the title of this document should include the applicant’s last name and “Enduring.”

Additionally, applicants and their families must complete a financial aid application through FACTS Management in order to be considered.

Applicants will be eligible for the following scholarship:

The Daniel Censullo ’84 Memorial Scholarship

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Daniel J. Censullo, this $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who has an immediate family member affected by cancer. The completed application requires an essay and evidence of financial need.

This $2,000 scholarship will be applied only in the 2020/2021 school year.

The Vito Chiaravalloti, Sr. Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Founded by Vito Chiaravalloti Jr. in loving memory of his father, Vito Sr., this $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who has an immediate family member affected by cancer.

This $1,000 scholarship is renewable for three years provided that the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

The Jonathan Morse Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Founded by Lucie Morse, Nick Morse ’17, and Gianna Morse in loving memory of Jonathan Morse, this scholarship will be awarded to a qualified student who supports the philosophy and objectives of CBA through his actions and attitude.  For the 2021/2022 awarding of this scholarship, preference will be given to a student who has either lost an immediate family member due to the Covid-19 pandemic or has had an immediate family member suffer lasting hardship due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This $1,000 scholarship is renewable for three years provided that the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

The Folded Flag Scholarship

Founded by the Folded Flag Foundation, this full tuition scholarship is awarded to a student who has lost a family member while deployed in combat. Eligible recipients must be the child of a member of the U.S. military or an employee of the U.S. government who has died as a result of hostile action or in an accident related to U.S. combat operations.

This scholarship is renewable for three additional years provided that the student maintains a GPA of 80%

The Academy Oath Scholarship

The Academy Oath says that CBA students will do the following:

Live lives of honor and integrity,

Serve and stand for those in need,

Strive for wisdom in the pursuit of knowledge.

Please submit an essay (500 word limit) in response to the following: Pick one of these three ideals and explain why it is of personal importance to your future as you prepare to be a student at Christian Brothers Academy.

Application Requirements: Please attach your essay to your submission email sent to scholarships@cbalincroftnj.org; the title of the document should include your last name and “Academy Oath.”

Additionally, applicants and their families must complete a financial aid application through FACTS Management in order to be considered.

Applicants will be eligible for the following scholarships:

The James ’82 and Heidi Maggs Endowed Scholarship

Founded by James ’82 and Heidi Maggs, this $1,000 endowed scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who strives for a CBA education.

These scholarships are renewable for three years provided that the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

The scholarships below do not require an additional application from students

The Alumni Association Scholarship

One Alumni Association Scholarship is awarded each year to an incoming freshman whose family could not otherwise afford a CBA education. Principals from area catholic middle schools are asked to submit a recommendation of one student for the Alumni Association Scholarship. Students are then invited to submit a specific application and have an interview.

Alumni Association scholarships are full scholarships that are based on financial need, academics, community service and a commitment to others. These scholarships are renewable for three additional years.

The De La Salle Scholarship

The De La Salle Scholarships are determined on the basis of entrance exam scores, grade reports, and evaluations from the applicant’s previous school, the contents of the application, and the essay written during the entrance exam.  These scholarships are awarded by the President of Christian Brothers Academy and no further materials are needed to apply.

These scholarships are renewable for three additional years as long as the recipient maintains a GPA of 93.

The Founders Scholarship

Named in memory of John Henderson. John Fleming and George Sheehan, the founders of CBA, the Founders Scholarships are determined on the basis of entrance exam scores, grade reports, and evaluations from the applicant’s previous school, the contents of the application, and the essay written during the entrance exam.  These scholarships are awarded by the President of Christian Brothers Academy and no further materials are needed to apply.

These scholarships are renewable for three additional years as long as the recipient maintains a GPA of 90.

The Brother Andrew O'Gara FSC Memorial Scholarship

Named in memory of CBA’s first President, The Brother Andrew O’Gara, FSC Memorial Scholarships are determined on the basis of entrance exam scores, grade reports and evaluations from the applicant’s previous school, the contents of the application, and the essay written during the entrance exam.  These scholarships are awarded by the President of Christian Brothers Academy and no further materials are needed to apply.

This scholarship is renewable for three additional years as long as the student maintains a GPA of 93.

The Teddy Gmelich Memorial Scholarship

The “Teddy Fund” was established by Victoria and Justin Gmelich, in memory of their infant son. The fund provides full scholarships for academically capable young men whose families could not otherwise afford a CBA education. Scholarship selections are made by the Edward Hall Gmelich Memorial Scholarship Fund.

This scholarship is renewable for three years provided the recipient maintains a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

The Brother Christian Jones FSC Memorial Scholarship for Mathematics

The Brother Christian Jones FSC Memorial Scholarship is offered to support an incoming freshman who has demonstrated a high proficiency in the subject of mathematics.

Candidates are determined based on performance on the math portion of the CBA entrance exam; qualified candidates will receive notification of their eligibility in the mail. The scholarship is awarded based on the student’s performance on a separate test that eligible candidates will be invited to take.

This $2,500 scholarship will be applied only in the 2020/2021 school year.

The Breton Family Math Scholarship Endowment

The Breton Family Math Scholarship Endowment will award a $4,000 scholarship to support an incoming freshman who has demonstrated a high proficiency in the subject of mathematics.

Candidates are determined based on performance on the math portion of the CBA entrance exam; qualified candidates will receive notification of their eligibility in the mail. The scholarship is awarded based on the student’s performance on a separate test that eligible candidates will be invited to take.

This $4,000 scholarship will be renewable for an additional three years provided the recipient maintain a GPA of 80% and continued evidence of financial need.

The Peter R. Santanello Scholarship

This $2,000 scholarship was founded in honor of Mr. Peter R. Santanello who served the CBA community for 41 years as the first layman to be appointed Principal. This scholarship is based on financial need and math aptitude and is selected by the President of CBA.

This scholarship is renewable for three additional years as long as the recipient maintains a GPA of 86.
