ALUMNI RETURN TO CBA FOR SECOND ANNUAL KEANE CUP
September 18, 2017
For over three decades, coach Dan Keane roamed the sidelines as his Christian Brothers Academy soccer team won five state championships and nine conference titles.
On Saturday, Coach Keane was back on the bench as over 30 of his former players returned to the Academy for the second annual Keane Cup alumni game.
A new tradition conceived by current head coach Tom Mulligan ’83, the Keane Cup brings players from CBA Soccer’s storied history back to the Academy’s field for a light-hearted alumni match, all while honoring the man who put the program on the map. Keane retired at the end of the 2015 season, winning one last Shore Conference Championship in his farewell campaign.
“Our alumni soccer players look forward to playing on the varsity field each year and reconnecting with lifelong friends and families,” Mulligan said. “Best of all, legendary coach Dan Keane gets to reunite with many of his personal ‘hall of famers’ and keep updated with the lives of so many alums that he influenced.”
The alumni in attendance sported their new Nike t-shirts and were split into two teams, playing two 30 minute halves to decide which color is victorious. With some alums having been out of the game for quite some time, plenty of laughs and old CBA camaraderie ensued during the contest.
After the players could catch their breath, the alums were treated to a post-game BBQ with current CBA students and fans thanks to the CBA Student Council. The alumni were then able to stay and watch the current varsity squad host St. Benedict’s Prep in a highly anticipated match-up.
“One of the best thing about this new tradition is that we continue to grow the event each year,” Mulligan said. “In a single event, we are connecting our student council, pipes & drums, alumni soccer players, faculty, and supporters for a day filled with memories and competition.”
