CBA CHESS HONORED AT BOARD OF FREEHOLDERS MEETING FOR 2015 NJ STATE VICTORY

CBA Chess was honored Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Freehold’s Board of Freeholders meeting for their recent victories at the New Jersey State Championships in November at Brookdale Community College.
The Chess Team took top honors with the 12th grade team of Luke Drennan, Daniel Giammanco, Chris Giordano and Chris Wall and Stephen Calandrino dominating the 12th grade division. Individually, Drennan claimed the title of top 12th grader in the state, followe by Gianmarco taking 3rd, Giordano taking 4th, Wall taking 5th, and Calandrino taking home 8th.
The 10th grade team of Daniel Draganoff, Marc Sorrentino, Michael Gilbride, Andrew Mullaghy, and Kenny Skelton won with an excellent last round. Strong individual showings came from Draganoff who placed 3rd, Sorrentino placing 7th, and Kilbride taking 10th.The 11th grade team of Tyler Gentile, Chris Zachariah and Nick Karris came in 2nd place. Individually, Gentile came in 9th place.
The night marked an important recognition of the 2015 Chess Team campaign, one of if not the best in program history. The team, under head coach Pat Melosh’s leadership since 1999, has proven time and again to be one of the most dominant chess programs in the U.S., as well as one of the largest (averaging 28-40 members each year.)
Season Highlights
  • Second at Nationals(12th grade).
  • 4th at Nationals (10th grade).
  • First place overall in the 46th Annual National Chess Congress Tournament in November.
  • First place team at the New Jersey Grade Championships, held at Brookdale Community College.
  • Top 12th grade player in the State (Luke Drennan) at NJ Grade Championships.
