The CBA Math Team is bringing back a tradition over four decades in the making: the Brother Christian Jones Middle School Math Tournament.
For 43 years, the Brother Christian Jones 8th Grade Math Contest was one of Monmouth and Ocean County’s premier elementary school challenges. A single day event, the contest—normally held on a Saturday—featured nearly 30 public and private elementary schools and a test designed specifically for the eighth grade level. The contest was named after Brother Christian Jones, a stalward of the Academy and fixture of the Mathematics department who tought countless students. While the namesake contest came to an end at the 2015-16 school year, this new iteration features a completely new, student-focused approach.
Now, CBA Math Team members play a critical role in the design and operations involved with the newly minted “Brother Christian Jones Middle School Math Tournament.” The CBA students create the various test questions, sending them to participating schools, and aggregating the final test results. All tests are then submitted to and graded by the CBA Math Team, under the supervision of CBA Math teacher & team moderator Matthew Reagan.
This year’s test features six rounds administered at their respective schools, with the final round scheduled for April 2017 at CBA. The final round will feature a series of math-related and logic-based questioning to test depth, speed and accuracy. The final round will also provide elementary school students with a familiarity for what to expect from high school level math competitions.
CBA students will enjoy the challenge of seeing a long-term project completed, from concept to executions; elementary school students will gain a greater appreciation for math from some younger role models. CBA Math teachers Matthew Reagan and Anthony Cecilione will announce the winning students and elementary school teams following the final rounds’ conclusion.
