McGuire ’25 Sees Similarities Between CBA, UPenn
May 8, 2025
As he prepared to choose a high school as an eighth grader at Markham Place, Carter McGuire ’25 understood that Christian Brothers Academy would be a place where he would be challenged.
Fast forward to four years later, the Little Silver native has reaped the benefits of being pushed in the classroom, on the field and in the community. His hard work has earned him the opportunity to attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall.
“I wanted to challenge myself academically, be able to do a bunch of different opportunities and that’s what I found here at CBA,” McGuire said. “Also at UPenn, there are a lot of different opportunities, not only in general, but also in what I want to pursue in college.”
Impressively enough, McGuire plans to study neuroscience when he begins his collegiate studies, which stems from interest that was peaked in the CBA classroom.

“I have been interested in it ever since I was little, the brain and how it is controlling your whole body. There is a lot left to be discovered about it. That uncertainty and curiosity is what drives me to even learn more about it.”
This school year, he jump started his deeper learning about the human body by taking anatomy and physiology with Mr. Orozco.
“That was a pretty challenging course, but it was one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken here at CBA,” he said. “We learned all about the body, and even the nervous system, and I am very interested in that, especially since I am going to pursue that in college.”
Outside of the CBA classroom, McGuire completed independent research on Alzheimer’s Disease and its connections with sleep, as well as genetics research. It is all part of a passion for learning that was refined at the Academy.
While he has excelled academically, McGuire has been active in extracurriculars at CBA, including being a dedicated member of the varsity lacrosse team. He could be found acting as a student ambassador, participating in SADD, and tutoring elementary school children with the Christian Service program.
“CBA has developed me as a whole person, not just in a specific aspect,” he said. “That is a really special part about CBA. From spiritually to socially to academically, that is what makes CBA so great and that’s what I want to continue to do in college: see who I am and my full potential.”
