Academy Life

Service Programs

The Brother Joseph Miggins Service Program is meant to inspire Academy men to become true community leaders through service for others. The heart of the Gospel, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," serves as the guiding principle. The program's goal centers on expanding each student's perspective of the world, those in it, and connecting them with the truly needy; those who seek a more human quality of life.
Service Hour Requirements by Class Year

To graduate, each Academy man is required to complete a minimum of 50 service hours. Additionally, every student must meet the service hour minimum requirement each year for their specific class year as set forth below. A student who completes 50 hours in one year is still required to complete the minimum hours each subsequent year. Students are encouraged to and often exceed the required amounts. Last year's class completed over 26,000 service hours, averaging just under 100 total hours per student.

The minimum service hour requirements by class year are:
  • Freshman Year: 10 Hours
  • Sophomore Year: 15 Hours
  • Junior Year: 15 Hours
  • Senior Year: 10 Hours

What Qualifies?
A generous service to the less fortunate, the needy, the dependent and the poor.

This includes:
  • LaSallian Youth Projects (sponsored by CBA during the academic year),
  • Special Olympics, ARC, and Challenger Sports Programs
  • Soup Kitchens, Habitat for Humanity
  • Altar Serving, teaching CCD
  • Tutoring and similar service projects

What Does NOT Qualify?
A selfless activity that may indeed be generous, but is not oriented towards the less fortunate, the needy, the dependent or the poor.

This includes:
  • Athletic competitions and practices
  • Chores for family members
  • Personal employment
  • Apprenticing, mentoring or job shadowing with a business professional
When in doubt, contact your Service Committee Member (listed below).

Start Early, Track Often!
Encourage your son to (1) start as soon as possible and (2) track his service hours. This is a vital component for completing his Service Hours Summary, the National Honor Society application, and any job or college applications.

The three-step process for CBA Service Hours is as follows:

List of 3 items.

  • Step One: Submit a Service Proposal

    SUBMIT A SERVICE PROPOSAL

Service proposals must be submitted online by Sept. 30, 2016. Proposals must describe what the student intends to do for his Service Hours. Service Proposals can be submitted over the Summer if a student wants to do his Service Hours then. A Service Committee Member will review the Proposal for appropriateness, responding only if it does not qualify. Students can always login and check to see that his proposal has been accepted. Students must submit one proposal for each project; do not group multiple projects into a single proposal.

  • Step Two: Complete the Service Hours

Freshmen, sophomores and juniors can volunteer between June 1, 2016 and March 26, 2017; all Service Hours for these students must be submitted by March 28, 2017Seniors can volunteer between June 1, 2016 and January 8, 2017; all Service Hours for Seniors must be submitted by January 5, 2017.
  • Step Three: Submit Service Summary

Summaries of volunteer hours must be submitted online no later than January 5, 2017 for seniors and March 28, 2017 for underclassmen. The summary should detail what the student actually did for his Service Hours. He will need to provide the Organization, Dates of Service, a Contact Name and Phone Number and a brief Description of what service was performed. A Service Committee Member will review the summary and will contact the student only if there is a problem with the submission. Do not submit a summary for a proposal that has not been approved; you must have approval for your proposal before you can submit a summary.
