School & College Counseling

The School & College Counseling Department at Christian Brothers Academy seeks to meet the needs of its students in a number of ways.

As freshmen, students are provided with continuous encouragement in their new academic pursuits. A focus on topics like study habits, time management, extracurricular involvement and social adjustment are meant to ease the transition to CBA. Counselors encourage freshmen to set and work toward various goals—both academic and non-academic—as they make their way through the Academy.

During the student’s sophomore year, counselors assist students in improving upon their freshman year, making the changes necessary to achieve greater success, and building a well-rounded portfolio of interests. After taking the PSAT, each student meets with his counselor to discuss his performance and for ways to improve on the skills needed to score well on the SAT in their junior year. Sophomores are advised to set long-term goals and begin constructing a student profile that can be highlighted during the college application process in the next two years.

As students continue through their junior and senior years at the Academy, their counselors now focus on guiding them through the college application process, as well as continued personal growth. The parents of juniors are strongly encouraged to schedule a meeting with their son and his counselor to have a detailed discussion about the college process specific to their son’s needs. Students are encouraged to take part in our on-campus college visitation program, where over 100 colleges visit the Academy, giving juniors and seniors the opportunity to gather pertinent information from the college representatives.

Each young man is guided in the best possible way for his particular needs and concerns. The student is encouraged to seek information, examine alternative routes of action, and assume responsibility for making his own post-graduate plans and decisions. Above all, the mission of the Counseling Department remains to help every young man discover and develop the talents and gifts that God has given him.
