At Christian Brothers Academy, we are proud to offer a wide variety of vocal and instrumental music options, for beginners and experienced musicians alike.
The vocal and instrumental areas have consistently delivered strong public performances, many of which receive national recognition and exposure. In recent years, students have had the chance to play to sold-out crowds alongside major names like Max Weinberg, drummer of Bruce Springsteen’s famous E Street Band. Notable achievements include the Jazz Ensemble earning a Gold Rating and the Men’s Choir earning Silver at the 2015 Heritage Music Festival in Annapolis, MD.
Likewise, the CBA Pipes and Drums band is an annual award-winner, comprised exclusively of students who have never played bagpipes before entering high school.
Since opening in 1985, the Shaheen Music Wing for Performing Arts has served as the hub for our performing arts groups. Facilities include a practice room equipped with pianos, amplifiers, and drums, as well as several larger rooms for ensemble rehearsals.
This ensemble is comprised of saxes, trombones, trumpets, piano, bass, guitar, and drums. Various musical genres such as Jazz, Rock, Fusion, Funk, Latin, and Big Band styles will be studied and performed.
An emphasis on vocal technique, tone production (good singing habits), musicianship, and of course fun! The CBA Men’s Choir studies and performs a variety of works, from traditional to present day.
Open to all instrumental music students of varying levels. Beginners welcome, including instrumentalists who would like to learn a second instrument.
By audition. Provides underscoring for the spring musical. The Pit Orchestra will work very closely with the Theatre Department. Intstrumentation will vary depending on the musical being performed.
Designed exclusively for pianists. Often pianists are left out as instrumentalists because the piano is considered a solo instrument. In this group, you will learn how to work with with other musicians, be part of ensemble, follow a conductor, and accompany instrumentalists and vocalists.
Bag Pipes & Drums is open to all students interested in learning about and playing bagpipes and drums. The club meets for lessons one day per week on Thursdays. There are two professional instructors with the goal of having a group of students ready to represent CBA at events and parades by St. Patrick’s Day.
Pegasus Production Company is CBA’s fully student-run theater company, composed of a family of both Academy and nearby high school students. Every year, the Company produces a fall play and a spring musical. Along the way, students work as a team, set individual goals, and are continually encouraged to pursue their creative interests.
Unlike most high school level programs, Pegasus is a truly student-run initiative. Every aspect, from set design and construction, to costumes and lighting, to sound and even production tech is managed entirely by the students. Company members meet daily September through March and weekly April through May. Officers are chosen based on work ethic, responsibility, experience and their written application. Students must attend 10 meetings per show to be considered a member in good standing.
All students interested in performing, production, or being a part of a great student-run organization are encouraged to join. Mr. Marcos Orozco ’01 has served as program director for the since 2013.
The Pegasus Production Company has a place for every type of student. Experienced actors and those who have never been on stage are welcome to try out for any part in our productions. No matter what the experience or the part they receive, each student will receive individualized attention and direction that will help them to become better actors. Females from the surrounding local high schools are encouraged to join the Company for a unique opportunity to be part of Christian Brothers Academy.
Acting, however, is only a small part of Pegasus Production Company. Students who do not wish to be on stage can still be involved. Those with experience in or wanting to learn about construction, design, sound, lighting, painting, etc. will find their place behind the scenes. The “backstage” aspect of the Company is fun for everyone and can teach lifelong skills to those with little experience and help those with experience to perfect their talents.
Those who don’t like to act or work with their hands still have a place in the Pegasus Production Company. There is an entire section devoted to managing the production. Students have the opportunity to direct, manage and run the whole operation. Those interested in business, management, accounting and advertising can gain real world experience promoting and selling a product as well as learning how to balance a budget and turn a profit.
Some aspect of the Pegasus Production Company meets every day after school in the Henderson Theater, but your involvement can be as little or as much as you wish. Everyone is welcome at all rehearsals or you can simply email Mr. Orozco at email@example.com for more information.
