Jazz Band Receives Awards, Will Host Music Festival at CBA
April 25, 2022
Christian Brothers Academy’s jazz musicians continue to impress throughout the local community.
A few days before they performed the annual Spring Concert at CBA, the jazz band traveled to Piscataway as featured players in the High School Jazz Festival.
Junior Heran Miao was awarded with an Outstanding Soloist Award on the saxophone. In addition to Miao’s individual award, the Jazz Combo was recognized as the Best Rhythm Section at the festival.
With the band’s profile growing each year, CBA was asked to host the All-Shore Jazz Festival on May 4 for the first time in program history. The concert will feature jazz bands from six area high schools.
“Hosting the All-Shore Jazz Festival for the first time is a great privilege for CBA and our Music Department,” said music director Christian Lopez. “The Jazz Festival is one of the few opportunities for students in Monmouth County to listen to performances by their peers from other schools and spend time sharing music as a community. CBA is happy to be able to provide a place for so many young musicians to showcase their talents.”
There will be performances from both CBA’s Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo during the All-Shore Festival. Their performances will feature solos from students such as John Lakeman ’24 (guitar), Connor Barkey ’24 (trumpet), Sam Ferro ’23 (piano), Heran Miao ’23 (tenor saxophone), James Penczak ’23 (drums), Hansen O’Connor ’23 (guitar), Andrew Vilchez ’22 (saxophone), and Tim Spalthoff ’22 (trumpet).
The festival will begin at 5:30 p.m. on May 4 in Henderson Theater. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door ($10 adults/$5 students & senior citizens).
